Mt. Hood Rest Area Relocation Project

by Becca Kolibaba

Currently in its planning phase, the Mt. Hood Rest Area relocation project is integral to several future development projects within the Government Camp community and Mt. Hood corridor.  One of the most impactful projects slated for the area is the Timberline Lodge 2022 Master Plan, which includes the Timberline Express Gondola, connecting Summit Pass in Government Camp and Timberline.

According to ODOT, "In 2021, Oregon Governor Kate Brown convened a team to consider the relocation of the Mt. Hood Rest Area. Since then, this group of leaders and partners has been working together to assist the community and interested parties in preparing a process and plan for rest area relocation.

This is a partnership project with:

  • Oregon Solutions
  • Oregon Travel Information Council
  • Travel Oregon
  • U.S. Forest Service

What Problem Will This Improve?

Exponential growth in traffic and changes in use render the rest area no longer able to safely meet the travel, work, environmental, and recreational demands of the 21st century.

Relocating the Mt. Hood rest area will benefit the traveling public by:
  • Increasing safety.
  • Increasing traffic and freight capacity.
  • Modernizing the rest area facility.
  • Reducing environmental impacts.
  • Improving the availability of public services.
  • Enabling local development"
